Tree planting
Now is the perfect time to get new trees into the ground. They are best planted in the late autumn, especially bare rooted varieties.
The soil in the autumn is warm and moist so gives trees the time they need to produce new roots and acclimatise before the onset of next summer’s heat.
Frozen or waterlogged
Container grown trees can be planted at any time of year as long as the soil is not frozen or waterlogged.
Trees can tolerate acidic, chalky, sandy and clay soils, so get planting now before the ground gets too hard or frozen. Planting trees is great for adding structure to a landscape or garden and many make excellent hedges and screens.
Different varieties
There are many different varieties too, from flowering cherries and crab apples to evergreen yews and weeping willows. They all offer different leaf sizes, shapes and colours.
Many also have attractive flowers, fruits and seeds. Some flower magnificently in the spring and others such as Liquidambar offer brilliant autumn colour just before leaf fall.
Carbon footprint
Planting a tree is a great way of reducing your carbon footprint too and as part of 2024 National Tree Week, which runs from November 23 until December 1, we’re encouraging everyone to plant a tree in their garden.
National Tree Week
National Tree Week first began in 1975 and has become the UK’s largest annual celebration, launching the start of the winter tree planting season.
The week encourages communities to do something positive for their local treescape. The Tree Council’s member organisations set up worthwhile and accessible events, inspiring millions of people to get together to plant trees.
Plant a tree today
An old Chinese saying regarding tree planting goes like this. The best time to plant a tree was 50 years ago but the next best time is today! So, if you are looking to plant some trees soon don’t delay.
