Planting a bareroot hedge
Planting bareroot hedges is a fantastic way to create thriving, cost-effective green boundaries.
However, proper handling and planting are essential to ensure strong establishment and long-term growth. Here’s a simple guide to help you get it right.
- Preparing for planting
Before your bareroot hedges arrive, prepare the planting area:
- Clear away weeds and debris.
- Loosen the soil and enrich it with organic matter if needed.
- Measure and mark out your hedge line, considering sunlight, soil type, and spacing for your chosen species.
- Receiving and handling bareroot hedges
When your plants arrive:
- Inspect them for healthy, moist roots and intact stems.
- Keep roots moist at all times—store them in a cool, shaded area and mist with water if they begin to dry out.
- Planting your hedge
- Dig a hole and place the roots in, spreading them out to maximise surface contact.
- Ensure the plant is upright and aligned.
- Fill the hole with soil until level, then press down firmly around the base to eliminate air pockets.
- Water thoroughly after planting to prevent root dehydration.
Final tips
If you can’t plant immediately, keep the roots moist and cool to prolong plant life. Proper care during these early stages will help your hedge thrive for years to come.
