Believe it or not autumn/winter is the best time to plant bulbs including corms, tubers and rhizomes ready for next spring.
Looking ahead and planning for spring in your garden or on your patio or balcony will give you something to look forward to in these troubling times. Just starting small with a tub or two of bulbs will help get you outdoors, boost your mood and give some joy when they come up in 2021.
Most bulbs suit well-drained soils in a sunny spot. However, for shady areas you could plant anemones or snowdrops.
Bulbs really benefit from being planted now, as they can develop extensive root growth before the spring. Tulips can also be planted in November too.
Most bulbs will thrive in a warm site with good drainage and are perfect for pots and containers.
They are best planted in groups with the growing points facing upwards. You need to plant them at least three times the depth of the bulb size and keep a similar distance between bulbs too.
It’s important to continue gardening during these troubling times, as it’s great for your mental wellbeing and general physical health too.
Your local garden centre will have all you need for your winter garden. To find your local centre click here but please check COVID restrictions before travelling.
