Jobs to do in the garden in September part 1 – planting and pruning
At this time of year, you’ll be seeing a few changes happening in the garden, as well as the mornings becoming dewier and crisper and the days beginning to get shorter, and there will be plenty of jobs to get done before the winter sets in.
Now is the ideal time to start planning for next year.
Planting
You can make a start on your planting in time for next year. Here’s a few things you can be getting on with:
- You can plant new trees, climbers and shrubs now.
- Overwintering vegetable crops such as bulb onions, garlic, turnips and winter lettuce can still be planted
- Daffodils, fritillaries, crocuses and grape hyacinths can be planted from mid-September
- Biennials and hardy annuals can be sown too
- Mid-September is the last chance to plant indoor bulbs for Christmas flowering
- Ground cover plants like periwinkle can also be planted to help suppress weeds.
Pruning
Get those secateurs out and get pruning the last of summer raspberries. Tie in any new canes for next year. Try to keep only the healthiest canes and cut out weaker stems.
You can also continue pruning climbing roses once the flowers are over and trim back runners on brambles and other flowering climbers.
