Making the most of your garden in June: colour & pollinators
June is one of the most vibrant months in the garden, making it the perfect time to focus on creating colour while supporting pollinators like bees, butterflies and hoverflies.
Start by planting nectar-rich flowers to attract beneficial insects.
Food sources
Popular choices include lavender, foxgloves, alliums and cosmos. Not only do these add striking colour, but they also provide essential food sources for pollinators throughout the summer.
Summer bedding
If you have gaps in borders, fill them with summer bedding plants such as petunias, marigolds and begonias.
These will quickly establish and provide an instant lift. For a more natural look, consider mixing in wildflowers or letting a small area grow a little looser to encourage biodiversity.
Great displays
June is also a great time to add height and structure. Stake taller plants like delphiniums and dahlias early to prevent wind damage and keep displays looking neat.
Climbing plants like honeysuckle and jasmine will begin to flourish now, offering both fragrance and vertical interest.
Support wildlife
To further support wildlife, opt for natural control methods. Even small actions, like providing a shallow dish of water with pebbles for insects to land on, can make a big difference.
Pollinator-friendly planting
Don’t forget containers and hanging baskets – mix trailing plants with upright varieties for a full, balanced look. Regular feeding and watering will keep them thriving through the month.
By focusing on colour and pollinator-friendly planting, your June garden can become a lively, buzzing space that not only looks beautiful but also supports the wider environment.
