May in the garden: growing & caring tips
May is one of the most exciting gardening months.
With longer days, warmer soil and the risk of frost fading, it’s a time of rapid growth.
Jobs to do in the garden now
May is ideal for planting summer bedding such as petunias, begonias and geraniums.
Harden off young plants before planting them outside, gradually acclimatising them over a week.
It’s also the perfect time to sow vegetables like carrots, beetroot, lettuce and courgettes directly into the ground.
Watch the weeds
Keep on top of weeds, as they grow quickly in warmer conditions and mulch borders to retain moisture and improve soil health.
Leave the lawn
It’s No Mow May, so if you can leave your lawn to do its own thing for the month, it will become highly beneficial to wildlife and pollinators.
Keep an eye on watering & pests
Water newly planted shrubs and perennials regularly, especially during dry spells. Early mornings or evenings are best to reduce evaporation.
Keep an eye out for pests such as aphids and slugs, tackling them early using wildlife-friendly methods where possible.
Don’t forget to deadhead
Regular deadheading of flowers will encourage longer-lasting displays and healthier plants.
