Planting allium bulbs
The perfectly formed allium is a sight to behold in the garden, coming in a variety of colours from white, yellow and sky blue through to deep claret and mauve.
There are tall ones, short ones, single flowered and multi-headed ones that can add a different dimension to your planting schemes.
How to plant allium bulbs
Now is the time to be planting your allium bulbs and our CEO and horticultural expert, Peter, has put together his top tips on how to do this below:
- Plant your bulbs in a sheltered, sunny area with well-drained soil.
- Small and medium-sized Alliums such as Purple Sensation can be planted around eight to 10cm deep and 10 to 15cm apart. Larger varieties, such as the Globemaster can be planted individually or in groups at around 15cm deep.
- Once planted, water thoroughly. The roots will form throughout the autumn and a few sprouts may even develop.
- The bulbs will bloom around May/June and at the end of their blooming season be sure to cut them back after flowering well to encourage annual growth.
