What to do in the garden in August
August is one of the busiest and most rewarding months in the garden.
With a little attention now, you can enjoy a beautiful garden through autumn and set the groundwork for next year.
One of the most important jobs this month is watering. Hanging baskets, containers and newly planted shrubs can dry out quickly during warm weather.
Watering
Water thoroughly in the early morning or evening to minimise evaporation and help plants make the most of every drop. Adding a mulch around plants can also help retain moisture and suppress weeds. For more tips on watering, please read our blog here.
Deadheading
Keep your borders looking their best by deadheading flowering plants such as dahlias, roses and cosmos. Regular removal of spent blooms encourages more flowers and helps extend the display well into autumn.
This is also a good time to lightly trim lavender after flowering and cut back any perennials that are becoming untidy.
Harvest
The vegetable garden should be providing a generous harvest if you’ve been able to water. Pick beans, courgettes, cucumbers, tomatoes and runner beans regularly to encourage continued production. Harvest onions and garlic once the foliage begins to yellow and die back, allowing them to dry before storing.
Start thinking ahead
August is also an excellent month to start thinking ahead. Plant autumn-flowering bulbs such as nerines and begin selecting spring-flowering bulbs ready for planting in the coming weeks. You can also sow hardy annuals, winter salads and fast-growing crops such as spinach and lettuce for later harvests.
Enjoy your garden
Finally, take time to enjoy your garden. Whether you’re entertaining outdoors, relaxing among the flowers or planning next season’s displays, August offers the perfect opportunity to appreciate the results of your hard work while preparing for the months ahead.
