The gift that keeps on giving
When it comes to Christmas gift-giving, houseplants are often overlooked in favour of more traditional presents. Yet they bring colour, beauty and lasting enjoyment to the home throughout the festive season and beyond.
Whether given as a thank you, a celebration gift or simply as a thoughtful gesture, a well-chosen houseplant is a gift that can brighten someone’s home for weeks or even months.
At Christmas, our garden centre members have a good selection of flowering and foliage plants, making it one of the best times of year to discover something special.
The Christmas classic
No festive houseplant collection would be complete without the iconic poinsettia. Famous for its vibrant red bracts, modern varieties are now available in shades of white, cream, pink and even marbled combinations.
To keep a poinsettia looking its best, place it in a warm room away from cold draughts and avoid overwatering. With the right care, these striking plants can provide colour throughout the Christmas season.
Seasonal stars for winter colour
Cyclamen remain one of the most popular winter-flowering houseplants. Their elegant blooms range from pure white to rich reds and deep purples, while varieties are available in sizes from compact miniatures to impressive statement plants.
They thrive in cool conditions, away from radiators and fires, and prefer watering from below rather than directly onto the compost.
Indoor azaleas are another excellent choice. Their masses of flowers create an eye-catching display, proving that a relatively small plant can deliver an abundance of blooms. Consistent watering is key, as allowing the compost to dry out can shorten the flowering period.
Exotic beauty indoors
Orchids continue to grow in popularity and make wonderful Christmas gifts. Despite their exotic appearance, many varieties are surprisingly easy to care for. Long-lasting flowers and elegant forms ensure they remain a favourite for adding a touch of luxury to winter homes.
Fragrant festive favourites
For colour and scent, hyacinths and paperwhite narcissi are hard to beat. Their beautiful flowers and rich fragrance help create a truly festive atmosphere indoors.
Whatever your choice, a houseplant offers a thoughtful, living gift that brings joy long after the wrapping paper has been recycled. This Christmas, why not give the gift of greenery?
