April’s top tasks to tackle
Not sure what to be getting on with this month? Here are our top eight ideas to get you going and inspire you to get gardening:
- Sow onions, beetroot, purple sprouting broccoli and winter cabbage.
- Sow your first carrots, parsnips and leeks. Plant potatoes later in the month.
- Cut back newly planted raspberries to the ground and plant strawberries.
- Remove the dead heads of daffodils and other spring flowers but leave foliage intact.
- Finish pruning roses, buddleia and lavatera and give them a good feed.
- Mow lawns, weather permitting, weed and feed, but leave an area not mown so that wildflowers can grow there. Dandelions are a great food source for bees in early spring.
- Clean houseplant leaves with a damp soft cloth. Remove any dead leaves and repot those that need it now.
- Plant young cottage garden plants and shrubs whilst the soil is still moist.
