Gardening tips for July
July is one of the most satisfying months in the garden, with borders in full bloom, crops maturing and outdoor spaces at their most inviting.
However, it’s also a time to stay on top of maintenance to keep everything looking its best.
Watering
Watering, and feed regularly too, is key, especially during warm, dry spells. Aim to water plants early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce evaporation. Containers, hanging baskets and greenhouse plants will need particular attention, often requiring daily watering.
Deadheading
Deadheading is essential to keep flowers looking fresh and to encourage further blooms. Focus on roses, dahlias and bedding plants, removing faded flowers regularly to prolong displays.
Veg garden
In the vegetable garden, harvesting is in full swing. Pick courgettes, beans, tomatoes and salads regularly to encourage continued cropping. Don’t forget to keep feeding plants, especially tomatoes and other fruiting crops, with a high-potash fertiliser.
Pruning
July is also the perfect time to prune early-flowering shrubs such as lavender and philadelphus, once their blooms have faded. Trim back gently to maintain shape and promote healthy growth.
Weeds & pests
Keep an eye out for weeds and pests, as they thrive in warmer weather. Hoe weeds regularly before they take hold, and check plants for aphids, slugs and other common garden pests.
Enjoy your garden
Whether it’s relaxing among the flowers or planning ahead for autumn planting, July is a wonderful moment to appreciate all your hard work.
With a little care and attention, your garden will continue to flourish throughout the height of summer.
