Jobs to do in the garden in April
There is still a lot to tend to in the garden this month and below are some of the key jobs that will need your attention now.
Fertilise
- If we have a spell of wet weather, mulch around azaleas, camellias and rhododendrons, this helps keep moisture in the soil and should ensure good flowering next year
- During warmer weather fertilise and water plants in containers
- Bulbs are heavy feeders so apply fertiliser as they flower.
Plant
- At the beginning of the month chit and plant second early potatoes. Maincrop varieties can be planted at the end of the month
- Mid-month once the risk of frost has passed, you can begin to plant hardy annuals
- Beetroot, broad beans, cabbage, cauliflower, leeks, spinach, radishes and strawberries can be planted now too
- Sow sweet pea seeds or plant any that you have grown during winter. If you didn’t manage to sow your own check out the plants our member garden centres have in stock now
- Indoor seed sowing needs to be finished this month in order to be prepared for summer planting
- Continue to plant summer flowering bulbs
- Polyanthus and primroses can be divided and replanted in a shady area
- Finish planting raspberries
- Towards the end of the month plant up hanging baskets and pots. Our member garden centres will have a great range of bedding coming in this month.
