June jobs
June is a busy and rewarding month in the garden, with longer days and, fingers crossed, warmer, but not too warm, temperatures encouraging rapid growth.
Key tasks
Staying on top of key tasks now will keep your garden looking its best throughout summer.
Keep watering regularly, especially containers, hanging baskets, and newly planted areas, as they can dry out quickly in warmer weather. Early morning or evening watering helps minimise evaporation.
Check for moisture
Make sure, even if you have a bit of rain, you check by putting your fingers into the soil how dry they are before watering. Under or over-watering can cause lots of problems.
Feed plants weekly, particularly flowering plants like roses, bedding displays, and tomatoes. This supports strong growth and abundant blooms or crops.
Deadhead & tidy
Deadhead flowers such as roses, petunias and geraniums to encourage further flowering and keep displays tidy.
Similarly, tie in climbing plants like sweet peas and clematis to support healthy growth.
Harvest crops
In the vegetable garden, harvest crops regularly including lettuce, radishes, strawberries and early potatoes. Frequent picking encourages continuous production. Continue sowing quick-growing crops like salad leaves, beetroot, and carrots for a steady supply.
Mow & look out for pests
Mow lawns and consider leaving the clippings on the lawn to act as a natural fertiliser, unless growth is very long.
Stay vigilant for pests and diseases, such as aphids and slugs, which thrive at this time of year, especially if it’s warm and damp. Deal with them promptly using suitable methods.
Enjoy your outdoor space
Finally, take time to sit back and enjoy your garden – weather permitting, June is when many plants are at their peak, making it one of the most enjoyable months outdoors.
