Keeping windowsill herbs
With a little love and a bit of care you can keep fresh potted herbs on your kitchen windowsill for many months and use them in your cooking as they grow.
To find out how you can keep your herbs in good condition and get the best from them follow our three-point guide below – it’s as easy as one, two, three!
- Keep your herbs in the right place. They need a bright spot on a draught-free windowsill. Cold temperatures can damage them so be aware of that in the cooler months.
- Don’t over water them. This a common but easy mistake to make. Water a little and often. Every morning, touch the soil and if it is dry to your touch, then give your herb half an egg cup of water and feed fortnightly with a liquid feed.
- When you pick or snip off the leaves for use in cooking or to garnish dishes, take them from the top so that light can reach the lower part of your plant and it continues to grow well.
- Herbs that are ideal for growing on a windowsill include basil, parsley, sage, thyme, chives and marjoram.
